The Best Interior Design Advice You’re Not Taking

Decorating your home can be really exciting, but also stressful if you don’t know what you’re doing. When it comes to interior design, there are a few pitfalls to avoid. Here are the most common ones.

Flooring

When decorating a home, one of the most overlooked factors is a continuation of flooring – for example, in a bathroom where the flooring is not continued all the way up to and around the shower. While this may not seem super-important, it can give the illusion of space, which can be really important when it comes to selling.

Raising the roof

Many people – particularly those living in cities – face the challenge of living in a small space. While it may not be possible to extend your living room, you can ‘fake’ a little height with the clever use of furnishings. For example, investing in a tall and open bookcase will draw the eye upwards, thereby, making the ceiling seem higher.

Free Design Services

Meet a certified Hudson's designer in the showroom, online or at home. Small refresh or whole house, there's no charge and no obligation.

Coloring

You’ve probably been told at some point that dark colors make a room seem smaller. In actuality, the opposite is true. Using a dark or rich color on a signature wall will not only add interest to a room but can serve to ‘open up’ the room by breaking up the wall areas. Colors that work really well here are royal blue and trendy teal.

Wood Furniture

While you may love the walnut coffee table that you inherited from your grandmother, it may not be doing your room any favors. Dark woods such as walnut and teak can make a room appear small and crowded. To cheat some extra space, try replacing dark wood furniture with glass or lighter woods like pine to add some space and light to the room.

A Designer, At No Cost

Most of the advice in this post is easier with someone measuring alongside you. At Hudson's that part is free.

Light it up

Although floor and table lamps can add a cozy feel to a room, they can also make an already bijou space seem smaller. Instead, try adding ceiling spotlights in order to optimize your space and make your room seem less full or cluttered.

Decorating your home is a matter of personal preference. There are no rights or wrongs. However, you do need to bear in mind the fact that your decor can very much have an impact on the results when it comes to selling your property. That’s why maximizing space and light are extremely important.
